Summary
Directed by Jay Skyler, this issue of IDM is an up-to-date, concise monograph on type 1 diabetes. Some very well-known experts have contributed articles: Alberto Pugliese on the genetics, Marian Rewers on the role of environmental factors and Chantal Mathieu and colleagues on the immunological pathways involved in the pathogenesis of the disease. Tina Tuomi and colleagues discuss the peculiarities of LADA, while Jay Skyler reviews recent studies designed to modulate the immune process in type 1 diabetes with the hope of preserving beta-cell function. This themed issue of IDM perfectly illustrates the aim of the journal: helping the reader keep abreast of the current literature, this time on type 1 diabetes, a condition that presently can be treated but sadly neither prevented nor cured.
